FIRST PLACE WINNER: Erika Cech – $100 Gift Certificate
It all started with the random questions on the drive to work mid-week.
“What’s your favorite song?” he asked.
“Uh, I don’t know,” I replied.
“How about favorite author?”
“Probably Terry Goodkind.”
“What’s your favorite color?”
“Periwinkle.”
“What color is periwinkle?”
“Kind of a blue-purple.”
Poor guy.
Fast forward to the weekend before Christmas. I had just reached the hotel in Lansing where the National Guard was putting my then-boyfriend-now-husband, Brian, up for the weekend. He was part of a group doing funeral honors on the western side of the state; this weekend was the holiday party for all the men and women so employed throughout Michigan. And, of course, significant others were invited. Little did I know …
Brian greeted me enthusiastically. Living on opposite sides of the state certainly made for enjoyable reunions when we did manage to get together. At one point, I said something along the lines of, “I’m just so happy with you.” Not too long after that, he goes over to a cooler and pulls out a pint of Haagen-Dazs Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream – it was a tradition of ours, splitting a pint of this particular brand and flavor whenever I came to visit.
Snuggled up, digging in, ahhhh pure bliss. After a few bites there was something that wasn’t supposed to be in there! He had opened the pint at home, stuck the bottom in hot water, dumped the ice cream onto a plate, put the ring in the container, dumped the ice cream back in, put the lid on and packed it in ice to bring to the hotel.) In a state of complete shock, I put the ring on – a beautiful white-gold ring with a blue stone as close to periwinkle as my poor guy could find (aha! the random questions from earlier in the week!) Brian says something about doing this properly, which goes right in and out of my head in my state of total surprise, gets down on one knee and asks me if I’ll marry him. Of course, he’s just beaming with the success of his plan. I looked at him like he was nuts for a second. Seriously, was there even a question about me saying yes? I then answered with a very enthusiastic, slightly tearful, beaming, “YES, PLEASE!” sandwiched between innumerable kisses. Being that it was my husband, I’ll have to close the scene with the slight giggle immediately afterward, when he reflectively asks, “how on earth am I going to top that for Christmas?”
2ND PLACE WINNER: Leslie Katz – $50 Gift Certificate It was April 5th, 2005. I left work a little bit early that day to prepare for the first Passover Seder of the year. At that time, my boyfriend Mitch and I had been dating since August 2001. Luckily, our families meshed right away so we’d been sharing Seders since 2002. The first Seder was always at Mitch’s mom Karen’s house. When my mom and I arrived, we helped in the kitchen for a bit and promptly took our seats. I had chosen a seat on the end of the table, to make it easier to get up and help clear dishes in between the courses. Mitch was unhappy with my seat selection and made me move to the middle of the table which did not make me happy. In the same moment, my mom decided to take a seat across the table which was totally out of character since we always sit next to each other at the Seders. So the Seder starts and it’s moving along normally. Looking back now, I realize that everyone was being a little quiet, but at the time, I hadn’t given it a second thought. We get to the Four Questions and sing together as is our tradition. When the questions ended, everyone was silent. I thought, maybe Zayde is leading the Seder a little differently this year. . . but the next thing I know, Mitch, to my right, says … “Tonight I have a 5th question.” He untaped a ring box from under the table, under my original seat. He looked at me and with shaky hands and took my hands in his. He proposed in Hebrew, and I lost my breath. I was so shocked, so excited, so unbelievably nervous, that all I could say was “I’d like nothing more.” Suffice it to say, everyone at the table knew it was coming but me; that’s why my mom wanted to sit across from me to get the perfect view, and why Mitch made me move seats for fear of finding the ring box taped under the table. More family members joined us later for dessert and celebration. It was the perfect 5th question I’ve ever been asked, and that’s how I got engaged.
